Favorites are always difficult to define, but I do know 2021 has been one of my most formative years full of firsts. From entering my second semester of university on Zoom to finally moving into my first apartment alone and actually sitting in a lecture hall, I grew more into myself than I have ever before; and it excites me knowing that with every chapter ahead of me, I have so much to learn, experience, and add on to what I already know.

In no particular order, here are 21 things I learned in 2021.

  1. Never miss a chance to say the compliment that crossed your mind; people deserve to hear how special they are.
  2. Base rates work and should be used, especially in getting those second-hand deals!
  3. Children will either mirror their parents’ habits or strive to do the opposite.
  4. Seasons are a construct of society, but there is beauty in having something to look forward to.
  5. Prioritize what you can control.
  6. If someone does something that bothers you, respectfully confront them about it. Holding grudges is an unhealthy way to live.
  7. It’s okay to let yourself feel, but if you can’t change what has happened, let it go and learn from the experience.
  8. Live life with people who make you feel unapologetically yourself. It’s not worth your time sustaining relationships that don’t add meaning to your life.
  9. Take opportunities to hear the immigration stories from your family and friends.
  10. True hobbies are activities that you do for yourself, not to prove yourself in any way. It’s something that you can always improve and find genuine excitement in.
  11. You don’t always have to know what you want to do, but there is so much out there to explore and find what keeps you going.
  12. Put extra thoughts into gifts! Gift giving can be fun and exciting.
  13. Say yes! Sure you can give excuses and stay in your comfort zone, but you’re more likely to remember a new experience rather than that other time you spent staying home.
  14. Some of the absolute best things in life are “free”: hugs, walks in the park, water, smiles…
  15. One of the greatest indicators of happiness is investing time in your human web.
  16. Refuel right after a 6+ mile run or else you’ll get a headache!
  17. Be mindful of what material possessions you bring into your life. It takes so much more time and effort getting rid of things you didn’t need in the first place.
  18. Change is inevitable.
  19. You can learn something from everyone, even those you dislike.
  20. Never compare your needs with others.
  21. Don’t break what’s not broken.
